His story
Stephen Tomer was a married labourer from Woodstock, New Brunswick, born on 14 January 1888. He named his mother Margaret as next of kin and declared a year’s earlier service in the 67th Regiment. His attestation was completed at Sussex on 17 August 1915. The variant Stephen Tomah also occurs in the records used to identify him.
He served as a private in the Canadian Army Veterinary Corps, no. 445412. He died on 6 April 1918, aged thirty, and was buried at Cardiff’s Cathays Cemetery. A portrait is preserved in the Veterans Affairs Canada gallery, traced to the August 1922 ‘All Woodstock Number’ of The Busy East of Canada.
