His story

Francis Michael MYERS was born at Durban on 16 September 1896 and trained as an agricultural student. He served as a dresser in the South African Veterinary Corps during the 1915 South-West Africa campaign and was demobilised in August. He sought a veterinary commission but did not hold RCVS membership, then joined the Suffolk Regiment and transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. The South African Roll of Honour records the Military Cross. He died on 14 February 1917, aged twenty, while serving with No. 20 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, and is buried at Ferme-Olivier Cemetery, Belgium. His earlier veterinary service is remembered here alongside his later commission.
