His story

George Frederick Murrell was born in Reading in 1874, the son of James and Mary Murrell, according to the Chipping Norton British Legion’s local research. His father was a coachman. George married Daisy Pinfold in 1903, and the couple had two children. He worked as a groom and coachman at Over Norton Park.

He enlisted in the Army Veterinary Corps and served as Private SE/6574 with No. 31 Mobile Veterinary Section. He arrived in France on 20 July 1915. His medal record lists the 1914–15 Star.

George died of pneumonia on 4 September 1915, aged forty-one. The local account places his death at No. 9 Casualty Clearing Station. He is buried in Lillers Communal Cemetery, grave IV. A. 27.

The local history records Daisy living at Lidstone near Enstone after his death. It also records her remarriage in 1918 and death in 1922.
