His story

Herbert Isaac McConnell was born at Magheralin on 21 September 1866, a son of Arthur and Elizabeth, also known as Eliza, McConnell of Moira. Before the war he served in the Royal Irish Constabulary, including at Cullyhanna. He married Eva Elizabeth Rowland at Creggan Church, Crossmaglen, on 22 September 1897.

Barry Niblock’s local research records three children. Their first child, Thomas John, died in infancy in 1899; Elizabeth and Herbert Rowland were born in 1905 and 1907. It places the family at Tullyvallen, Newtownhamilton, in 1911. The later CWGC family address is 28 Taylor Street, Newton-on-Ayr, Scotland.

Herbert enlisted in London and served as Private SE/2136 in the Army Veterinary Corps, with the Depot at Woolwich. He died at the 2nd Birmingham War Hospital on 16 May 1916 and is buried in Birmingham (Lodge Hill) Cemetery, Screen Wall B10. 4. 341.
