His story
Ernest James Clark was born at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, and was the son of John Joseph and Sarah Maria Clark. Before the war he worked as assistant baker.
He served as Sergeant SE/17644 in the Army Veterinary Corps, attached to the Royal Field Artillery. The available entry does not identify an artillery brigade or establish the date of his arrival overseas.
Ernest died of wounds on 3 September 1918, aged twenty-seven, and is buried in Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery, Haucourt, grave II. B. 8. The present evidence does not identify the action in which he was wounded or the circumstances of the injury. His service number and book record 380 distinguish his story from that of Private John Robert Clark.
