His story
Frederick Chilcott worked as a labourer and was married to Eliza. They lived at Puriton, Somerset. The account published by Death and Service says that he was born at Bridgwater in early 1867, a son of Henry and Ellen Chilcott, and married Eliza Stockham on 16 April 1895. It records six children born between 1898 and 1911.
That account describes earlier Royal Artillery service from 14 January 1888, including service in India between February 1889 and November 1890. It says he entered the reserve in January 1895, was recalled for the South African War in January 1900 and was finally discharged in March 1901.
During the First World War he served as a private in the Army Veterinary Corps under number SE/31078. Death and Service places him at the Curragh near the end of his service and records his death from an aneurysm in the military hospital there on 23 December 1917, aged 50. His body was returned to Somerset for burial in St. Michael’s Churchyard, Puriton.
