Biography
Captain William Huston was born in Manitoba, Canada, on 4 March 1887. He graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1915 and, in March 1915, was appointed to the British Army Veterinary Corps.
He served in France and was attached to the 37th Divisional Train.
The Divisional Train was the workhorse for the Division in terms of carrying stores and supplies, providing the main supply line for the transport of the brigades of infantry and artillery and other attached units. It initially comprised 26 officers and 402 other ranks of the Army Service Corps, looking after 378 horses, 17 carts, 125 wagons, and 30 bicycles.
Captain Huston was killed near Baillieu in France when he was hit by a motor lorry. The Court of Enquiry into his death discovered that a group of Officers were returning from the Officers Club and hailed a passing lorry to stop; when the lorry did not stop, Huston ran after the lorry. His fellow officers found him lying by the roadside. He died soon after from the injuries received from the accident.
Captain Huston was buried in Baillieu Communal Cemetery.
