Biography
Lieutenant-Colonel John Greenwood Clayton was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England, on 30 December 1865.
He graduated from the Royal College of Edinburgh and worked as a veterinary surgeon in Cheshire and Nottingham for several years.
He migrated to New Zealand and, in 1902, was appointed Captain in the New Zealand Militia and subsequently served in South Africa with the North Island Regiment as a Veterinary Officer.
The 1905 New Zealand Electoral Rolls show John Greenwood living in Wellington, New Zealand, where he worked with the Department of Agriculture.
In 1908, he received a promotion to Major, and in January 1915, he was appointed Principal Veterinary Officer for the Canterbury Military District. His principal role was purchasing horses for the Remount Department.
Lieutenant-Colonel John Greenwood Clayton died after a long illness on 25 January 1916 and was buried in Karori Cemetery in Wellington.
