Biography
Captain James Shirley MRCVS was born in 1865 in Twickenham, Middlesex, England, the son of veterinary surgeon Willian Shirley.
He graduated from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons on 28 June 1888. Before the outbreak of the war, he was in private practice in Bedale, Yorkshire.
He was attached to the Royal Field Artillery when, on 27 November 1917, he was killed by a piece of shrapnel.
He is buried in Gouzeaucourt, New British Cemetery, France. Records of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission show that Captain Sherley’s grave was occupied by an “unknown AVC officer.”
