Biography
Captain Harry Chown MRCVS was born in Caversham, Oxfordshire, England, on 3 January 1891. He graduated from the Royal College on 22 December 1914.
On 29 December 1914, he was appointed Lieutenant in the Special Reserve of the Army Veterinary Corps. During the war, he served in various units, but his main unit was the 48th Mobile Veterinary Section, which was attached to the 36th(Ulster) Division. Captain Chown was with the 48th MVS from 3 September 1915 until 9 September 1918.
During the war, Captain Chown was mentioned in Dispatches.
After the war, Captain Chown took up an appointment with the Egyptian Army as the district Inspector Veterinary Officer in Southern Darfur, Sudan.
On 21 September, 6,000 natives captured Nyala post, killing two British officers and 41 soldiers before being forced to retreat, having lost some 600 dead. Captain Chown was one of the officers killed in this attack.
Captain Chown does not have a Commonwealth War Grave, as his death occurred shortly after the August 1921 cutoff.
