Biography
Captain Daniel Pollock MRCVS, the younger son of veterinarian James Pollock, was born in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, in 1885.
He graduated from the Veterinary College Glasgow in 1915 and enlisted soon after. He was quickly promoted to the rank of Captain.
He was aboard the troop ship Arcadian when it was torpedoed and sunk on 15 April 1917 by U-Boat UC 74 in the Aegean Sea while transporting troops from Salonika to Alexandria in Egypt. Thirty-five crew members and 242 troops perished from the 1,335 on board at the time.
His death is commemorated in the Mikra Memorial in Greece.
Captain Pollock was reported as missing and believed to have drowned in the Veterinary Record on May 12, 1917. His death was confirmed in the May 26 issue.
