Biography
Captain Arthur Goule was born on 20 February 1859, the son of veterinary surgeon Henry Louis Goule.
He qualified as a veterinarian in London in 1871. In 1882, he worked in Melbourne, Australia, before obtaining an appointment as the King of Siam’s Veterinary Surgeon and Horse Inspector. He stayed in the position for approximately five years before returning to Australia and, during the 1890s, held the position of the President of the Victorian Veterinary Association.
He left for South Africa in 1900, and during the Boer War, he was a civilian veterinary Surgeon attached to the Army Veterinary Department. In 1905, he joined the Natal Veterinary Department and was stationed at Allerton Laboratory. In 1916, he volunteered for service in the First World War and saw active service in France.
On 12 September 1918, when returning to South Africa, he drowned at sea when his ship, the Galway Castle, was torpedoed by a German U-boat, the U-82.
Captain Goule’s obituary was in The Veterinary Record on February 8, 1919.
